A Guide to Courier Insurance for Vehicles
By: Paul McDuffy

Any San Francisco messenger service is going to have to hold two separate types of insurance to operate legally as a transportation company. The first type of insurance that a courier has to have is very similar to the insurance that other businesses have to have on their vehicles, and even is quite similar to personal vehicle insurance. They will insure their vehicles and drivers to be sure that all costs are covered in an accident. Generally speaking, wherever the courier company is located they will be sure to get all of the different types of insurance which are available in their particular state, as different states do have different laws about what types of insurance can be placed on a vehicle. The second type of insurance they will have is specific to the courier and messenger industry and is insurance which covers the value of the goods which they are carrying in their vehicles.

All courier companies will operate with some type of insurance of this kind, and customers have every right to assume that the companies will be insured in this regard. Remember, those are your goods that a courier company is carrying, and if for some reason you have cause to question the insurance coverage that the courier might have on the goods that they carry, feel free to call them up and ask them about the particulars of their courier insurance policy. Most companies carry very comprehensive courier insurance which will protect the value of the goods whether they are damaged in a traffic accident, due to weather, theft, vandalism, and a host of other potential situations which could cause damage to the packages that they carry.

Quite often a courier company will simply package all of their insurance needs together with one insurance company if that company offers all of the different types of insurance that they need. However, just like vehicle insurance there are several different types of courier insurance, and they may cover shipments up to different dollar amounts. This is why it can be worthwhile to discuss the insurance coverage that your courier provides with them before you make large shipments. Accidents don't happen often, but if they do you want to be sure that your financial interests are protected. If the courier isn't carrying sufficient insurance to cover the value of your goods you may want to look into getting extra insurance to be sure that you won't take a loss.
