Book Launch - Should You Launch On Your Book's Publication Date?
By: Matt Bacak

I have a book coming out. I want to promote the book so that it will become a bestseller and sell the highest number of copies possible. One of my questions has to do with the date of the launch. You have said that you should claim a date for your launch so that nobody else is doing a launch at the same time. Keeping this tip in mind is it best for a book launch to be on the book's publication date or should it be a different date? Which date works best?

Answer: I am glad that you are concerned with claiming the date for your launch. As far a book launch goes, I wouldn't have your launch be your publication date because there could be things inside the system that are not set up properly. For example, we launched on my publication date for one of my books and it was a real pain. Things weren't set up properly on Amazon. The books weren't ready from Amazon.

Basically, there are book production issues that are out of control. The printer may be in a different country and they have a monsoon that knocks out their printing power. That is an extremely example, but it could happen. It is best to avoid the book's publication date so you don't upset customers are have them lose anticipation because of a delay.

I would highly urge you to have your launch date one to two weeks after the book's publication date. That way, you will know for sure that your book has been published and ready to go. Also, try to have the launch on a Tuesday or Thursday. These are the best days of the week for launches. I have found the highest response and success when launching on these days.

Also, you might find out that somebody else is coming out with a book launch on the same day. You don't want to have to compete with another book. For example, Oprah's book club may be having a book launch on a certain day and you definitely don't want to launch your book on that day. The competition would be too stiff.

Research as much as you can about other book launch dates so you don't have to deal with this competition. You can find book launch information on publishers' websites, newspapers, and newsletters. You can also find out information about other book launches through your publisher. Ask your colleagues and people working the book marketing field.

You may have to move the date you originally planned to launch. Be flexible. The less competition, the better.
